Starting at Pong

I have decided to dedicate my first blog to the art of the drinking game, as well as the beers that should be happily consumed during the festivities. I figured that I should start at the top, meaning my favorite drinking game. So beer pong will be my first topic of conversation.

Beer pong is a delightful game that is most often played by with two teams of people on opposite sides of a ping pong table, although makeshift tables are common. In a normal game each team is given seven solo cups, six for beer and one for water. After filling the cups with the agreed upon amount of intoxicating refreshment each team forms their cups into a triangle that points to the opposing team. With beer in six and water in the seventh that remains off to the side you are ready for a competition that has a victor, although in my own opinion everyone wins.

Starting the game is usually a rule that is argued over by players because beer pong has many rules that differ depending on who taught you the game or where you learned it. For our purposes we will use the rules Iw'm most familiar with. One player on each team takes a pong ball, the two competitors lock eyes and shoot for the cups without looking away from the eyes of the opponent, whoever makes the cup first shoots first. When a ball goes into a cup the drinking part of the game begins, the person who shoots his ball into the opposing teams cup does a short (optional) victory dance or cheer as the team who's cup now has a ping pong ball in it has to consume its contents, minus the ball of course, the cup is then removed. The ball is washed off in the water cup in between shots to keep it as clean as possible and the team that makes all of the cups first is the winner.

Now, I know what you are thinking, "I understand the game but what delicious alcoholic beverage should I enjoy when playing this incredible game?" I've got that covered as well. A light beer is the most popular choice for a game where drinking is fast paced, but that is dependent on how good the competitors are at this particular game. I would recommend a nice cold Foster's oil can or a Heineken for this game. These two are lighter beers so you shouldn't get bloated from drinking them and taste isn't sacrificed either. Having a good tasting beer in your cup can come in handy for those longer games also, warm keystone light thats been sitting out for fifteen minutes is a lot harder to get down your gullet than warm Foster's or Heineken. Trust me.

  1. The suggestion about light beer is well placed. And your voice is terrific here. I wonder... what is the history of beer pong? Can you do some research? Fun!
